BALTIMORE -- Tampa Bay left-hander Matt Moore will miss the remainder of the season after opting to have elbow-ligament replacement surgery. Dr. James Andrews is to operate next week on the 24-year-old pitcher, who made the AL All-Star team last year. Moore will be the first Rays pitcher to undergo Tommy John surgery since Jason Isringhausen in June 2009. "I cant help out on the competitive side of this business right now," Moore said Tuesday before rain washed out the Rays game at the Orioles. "This is my first significant injury where Im going to be missing a lot of time." Manager John Maddon believes Moores decision will be beneficial in the long term for the pitcher and the team. "Its awful, but its great," Maddon said. "Its awful that were going to miss this guy for a bit. Its good for him to be able to get past this moment and look forward to a really long and prosperous career. Almost all of the time, percentage-wise, its a very successful operation." Moore hasnt pitched since walking off the mound with elbow soreness on April 7 in Kansas City. He was placed on the disabled list the following day. "It was an injury that I didnt think would be my ligament. I didnt think it was going to be something like that," he said. "It just didnt feel that severe." After throwing on the side Monday, Moore realized surgery was inevitable. "I dont think there was a whole lot of hesitation," he said, noting that he felt pain "on every single pitch." Moore also experienced elbow soreness last season while going 17-4 with a 3.29 ERA. He was 0-2 this year despite allowing only three runs in 10 innings. Moore is among three Tampa Bay pitchers on the disabled list. Right-hander Jeremy Hellickson is recovering from arthroscopic right elbow surgery and right-hander Alex Cobb has a left oblique strain. "Its tough," starter David Price said. "Theyre going to be working hard. Theyre going to be trying to get back here. Whenever they do, its going to be a good little shot in the butt for us, and thats what you need throughout the season." Maddon already has been forced to improvise his rotation. Left-hander Erik Bedard was going to start for the Rays on Thursday, but because of the rainout, Price will take the mound in the opener of a series against the New York Yankees. The German driver had already won two races by this stage last season, but this year he has only one third-place finish and is down in sixth overall behind Nico Hulkenberg and Daniel Ricciardo. Not helping matters, Vettels Red Bull teammate Daniel Ricciardo has back-to-back third places in Spain and in Monaco. The Australian driver seems much more at ease than Vettel with the engine regulation changes that came in at the start of the season. "I felt quite helpless in the car, so I was asking for an answer of what we could do, but there wasnt anything at that stage," Vettel said. "Its disappointing. I had a good start and then we lost boost pressure from the turbo, so I had no power and had to retire." Vettel moaned "come on guys" over the race radio when he was called into the pits, before changing tact with a more diplomatic "I mean youre trying everything.dddddddddddd" He had also complained of being "stuck in first gear," and team principal Christian Horner moved to reassure his star driver afterward. "First of all we have to apologize to Sebastian for an issue with his power unit," Horner said. "Its frustrating that, after making a good start, his race came to a very premature end." It is some contrast to last season, which Vettel rounded off with nine straight wins. He won 13 of 19 races and looked untouchable, retired only once -- at the British GP -- and finished on the podium 16 times as Red Bull crushed all the opposition. "We will move forwards, and it will be good for us soon," said Vettel, who also retired from the season-opening Australian GP. Ricciardo is nine points ahead of him heading into the Canadian GP in two weeks time. ' ' '
