Each week, TSN.ca Fantasy Editor Scott Cullen and NFL Editors Ben Fisher and Mike Hetherington discuss three hot fantasy football topics. If he remains healthy, will CJ Spiller return to RB1 status this year? Cullen: I think there was some market over-correction on Spiller this year, because he was so disappointing last season, scoring only two touchdowns after so much was promised in the preseason – remember, when he would "run until he throws up" – so I could very easily see Spiller being a viable RB1 by seasons end. The challenge is how many touches he will get and, on one hand, having a shaky quarterback likely makes the Bills lean towards running the ball more. On the other hand, Fred Jackson and even depth guys Anthony Dixon or Bryce Brown will compete for carries. Fisher: If running backs continue to get hurt at the rate they are this season, and Spiller isnt one of them, then sure, I can see him sneak into the Top 10. But theres too many better backs, and Spiller is still too inconsistent - especially with Fred Jackson stealing carries in Buffalo – to be considered a Top 10 lock. Hes now just barely on the brink of Top 10 with his kick return touchdown in Week 2. If you drafted Spiller it was likely as a low-end RB2; hell still pay you dividends, just not as much as you may be hoping for through two weeks. Hetherington: In order for the Buffalo Bills to be successful this year, they must run the ball. Spiller is the most explosive back on their roster and should take over the role of the feature back within a matter of weeks. Spiller and Fred Jackson each received 12 carries against the Dolphins but Spiller averaged 5.8 yards per carry to Jacksons 2.0. Going forward, the Bills will likely be a run-first team but if Manuel can continue to be proficient in the passing game, Spiller will benefit with less eight-man box looks. Hes already a solid RB2 in my mind and will likely be a RB1 within a matter of weeks as Jackson slips lower on the fantasy radar. The Bills simply have no choice but to get the ball into Spillers hands. Which QB, if any, will end Peyton Manning and Drew Brees mini-reign atop the QB rankings? Cullen: The way is Brees is going, there could be several (okay, as a Brees owner, Im venting). At this point, to me, the only viable candidates to move up into the Top 2 are the guys I had ranked three and four in the preseason – Matthew Stafford and Aaron Rodgers. Both have the ability to throw for 5000 yards and 30 touchdowns, and that will get a quarterback into that discussion. If I was going to reach a little more, Id consider Atlantas Matt Ryan, who could put up big numbers if Julio Jones and Roddy White stay healthy. Fisher: Its obviously early, but through two weeks neither Manning nor Brees has looked as impressive as they did the past while. But even so, the two are QB1s who could find their pace from last year any week. There are a couple QBs who could give Manning and Brees a run for their money but none Im willing to anoint the new No. 1s. Manning and Brees may not lead their position in scoring to the same degree they have recently, but their consistency should see them to the top of the rankings by seasons end. Hetherington: These two, not surprisingly, should remain in the top-five throughout the season. However, Aaron Rodgers and Andrew Luck both represent threats to take over the top spot. Rodgers, while keyed-in on Jordy Nelson, threw for 346 yards and three touchdowns against the Jets in Week 2 and faces another favourable matchup against the Lions secondary this weekend. If Rodgers stays in the groove he found late in the second quarter against the Jets, he will have a very strong season. Luck struggled in Week 2, but has six touchdowns (including a rushing score) so far this season. Luck is an elite-QB1 this week facing the Jacksonville Jaguars, while Manning plays the dominant Seahawks defence in Seattle. Brees should stay at the top playing at home against the Vikings. Are there any “backup” running backs youre comfortable with in your starting lineups? Cullen: In situations where there is a clear No. 1 guy, Id consider Darren Sproles, Jeremy Hill and Ahmad Bradshaw on a pretty regular basis. Then time-share guys like Joique Bell (Reggie Bush), Chris Ivory (Chris Johnson), Justin Forsett (Bernard Pierce) and Shane Vereen (Stevan Ridley) would all be reasonable choices when it comes to Flex spots. There is such a lack of depth at the running back position that anyone who can contribute consistent numbers, even in a backup role, has to be considered fair game. Fisher: As much as half the leagues backup running backs are owned in fantasy leagues, but there are only a couple I would be comfortable starting weekly. Behind maybe the best fantasy back in the league, Darren Sproles is currently outscoring LeSean McCoy and sitting near the top of the rankings through two weeks of the season. There was some concern the small back would lose the opportunities that made him a strong play in New Orleans once getting traded to Philly, but he continues to prove hes too talented to keep on the bench. Sproles probably wont keep his RB1 status all year, but he should be a decent bet as an RB2 or at worst a flex play. Im also high on Ahmad Bradshaw. While he plays more than “starter” Trent Richardson overall, Richardson still has more carries. That will probably change at some point this year. Hetherington: Ahmad Bradshaw and Chris Ivory are two backups who should be owned - and played - like starters. Bradshaw is coming off a monster performance against the Eagles, when he emerged with 70 rushing yards on 13 attempts, while starter Trent Richardson had 79 yards on 21 carries. Bradshaw also emerged as a pass-catching weapon with five receptions and two touchdowns. On the Colts, Bradshaw is the better fantasy own. Ivory continues to split snaps with Chris Johnson this season but has clearly been the better back. The Jets will likely reward Ivory with more carries going forward and being the goal-line back alone makes him a worthy RB2 or FLEX play. Danny Woodhead of the Chargers could also warrant a start in points per reception leagues. Fantasy Football Report powered by Coors Light Alex Smith Youth Jersey . As he set it down on the table, Kaymer rubbed off a tiny smudge on the gleaming silver, which was only fitting. Over four days at Pinehurst No. 2, he dusted the field in a performance that ranks among the best. Kaymer set the 36-hole scoring record by opening with a pair of 65s. He never let anyone closer than four shots over the final 48 holes. Equipped with a five-shot lead, he was the only player from the last eight groups to break par. Welcome back, Martin. "You want to win majors in your career, but if you can win one more, it means so much more," Kaymer said after closing with a 1-under 69 for an eight-shot victory over Rickie Fowler and two-time heart transplant recipient Erik Compton. "Some people, especially when I went through that low, called me a one-hit wonder and those things. So its quite nice proof, even though I dont feel like I need to prove a lot to people. But somehow, its quite satisfying to have two under your belt." The 29-year-old German is a forgotten star no more. Kaymer returned to the elite in golf by turning the toughest test in golf into a runaway at Pinehurst No. 2, becoming only the seventh player to go wire-to-wire in the 114 years of the U.S. Open. Only three players finished the championship under par. One guy appeared to be playing a different tournament. "No one was catching Kaymer this week," Compton said. "I was playing for second. I think we all were playing for second." Only a late bogey kept Kaymer from joining Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy as the only players to finish a U.S. Open in double digits under par. He let his putter fall to the ground when his 15-foot par putt on the 18th hole dropped into the centre of the cup, like so many others had this week. Kaymer finished at 9-under 271. His last two wins are the U.S. Open and The Players Championship, with the strongest and deepest field in golf. He never trailed after any round in both of them. "Martin was playing his own tournament," Fowler said after recovering from a double bogey on the fourth hole to close with a 72. This U.S. Open really ended Friday. No one had ever opened 65-65 in the U.S. Open, which broke the 36-hole record that McIlroy set three years ago rain-softened Congressional. When it could have gotten away from Kaymer in the third round, he stayed strong for a stabilizing 72. "He kind of killed the event in the first two days," Henrik Stenson said. "He went out and shot two 65s and left everyone in the dust." He did it again in thee final round.dddddddddddd Knowing the gallery was against him -- the loud cheers for Fowler, clapping when Kaymers ball bounded over the back of the second green -- he holed a 10-foot par putt, and then drilled a driver on the 313-yard third hole onto the green to set up a two-putt birdie. Fowler, in the final group of a major for the first time, fell back quickly on the fourth hole. He sent his third shot from a sandy path over the green and into some pine trees and had to make a 25-foot putt just to escape with double bogey. "It was probably the toughest day that I played golf today, especially the first nine," Kaymer said. "Because if you have two or three Americans chasing you, playing in America, its never easy being a foreigner. But I said at the ceremony as well that the fans were very fair. But it was a tough one. If you lead by five shots, its not easy. "A lot of people think, Well, you have a little bit of a cushion. But if you approach that day in that way, with that attitude, it can be gone so quickly." No chance on this day. Compton was the only player who really put up a fight. His birdie on No. 8 got him within four shots. Three bogeys in a five-hole stretch on the back nine did him in. Even so, Compton received a standing ovation walking the 18th green. He somehow scratched out a par from 50 yards away against the lip of a bunker. It wasnt the Hollywood script he wanted, but it wasnt a bad consolation -- his first trip to the Masters next April. "Ive never gotten this far along in my story," Compton said. "Im thrilled." Kaymer joined Seve Ballesteros, Ernie Els, Woods and McIlroy as the only players to win two majors and be No. 1 in the world before turning 30 since the world ranking began in 1986. He is the fourth European in the last five years to win the U.S. Open, after Europeans had gone 40 years without this title. Its a rebirth for Kaymer, who reached No. 1 in the world in February 2011, only to believe that he needed a more rounded game. His preferred shot was a fade. Kaymer spent two hard years and a lot of lonely hours on the range in Germany and his American home in Scottsdale, Arizona. He was as low as No. 63 in the world six weeks ago. Now he goes to No. 11. Woods still holds the most dominant U.S. Open win -- 15 shots at Pebble Beach in 2000. McIlroy holds the scoring record at 16-under 268. "Im wondering how he did it," McIlroy said. "Obviously, if you limit the mistakes, you might end up a couple under for the week. But to do what hes doing ... I think its nearly more impressive than what I did at Congressional." Among those who congratulated Kaymer on the 18th green was Sandra Gal, a German player on the LPGA Tour. The U.S. Womens Open takes over Pinehurst No. 2 on Monday. ' ' '
