DUBLIN Irv Smith Jr. Jersey , Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar on Friday visited northwest County Donegal to see the damage done by Tuesday night's devastating floods.
A ""once in a 100 years"" extreme weather event was responsible for the widespread flooding and devastation that struck the northwest, according to Met Eireann, the national meteorological service.
The intensity of rainfall overwhelmed drainage systems and destroyed older bridges in County Donegal, the weathermen said, adding that the Inishowen peninsula was the worst ravaged where almost 10 centimetres of rain fell in a few hours.
In Inishowen Garrett Bradbury Jersey , where Varadkar met affected residents and business owners, saying that it was remarkable that no one was killed or injured.
The Irish prime minister outlined the first steps in the government's response to the flooding, saying that the government has activated the humanitarian assistance program to provide financial relief.
The scheme will allow people in the region to purchase personal items such as clothes and food. People can also apply for grants towards the replacement of white goods, furniture and home repairs.
As many as 400 or 500 homes could have been affected by the severe flooding in County Donegal alone, according to government estimates.
